The Kamehameha Schools is seeking approval from the Hawaii Community Development Authority (HCDA) for a proposed Kaiāulu ‘O Kaka‘ako (Kaka‘ako community) Master Plan (KKMP) for a portion of its lands in the Kaka‘ako District. The Kaka‘ako District Mauka Area rules contain provisions for "master plans" to encourage timely development, reduce the economic cost of development, allow for the orderly planning and implementation of public and private development projects, and provide a reasonable degree of certainty in the development approval process." Further intended benefits include the derivation of public benefits which would not otherwise be required from private developers and greater flexibility in the development of lots.
The Kamehameha Schools' Kaka‘ako lands are centrally located in the south-western portion of the Kaka‘ako District and the KKMP area includes approximately 28.91 acres of land. The Kamehameha Schools intends to develop a mixed-use urban village on nine contiguous blocks, containing a mixture of low-rise and high-rise structures, a range of housing types, open spaces, a central community gathering place, and neighborhood supportive commercial and industrial uses.
HCDA is seeking feedback from the community on the Master Plan application. A community meeting on the Plan is scheduled for May 7, 2009, starting at 4:30 p.m., at the Honolulu Design Center, Cupola Theatre, 1250 Kapi‘olani Boulevard, 2nd Floor, Honolulu, Hawai‘i 96814. Oral and written comments on the Master Plan will be received by HCDA Staff at one meeting. An addendum to the Plan can be found on the Kaiāulu ‘O Kaka‘ako Master Plan page as under "Supporting Documents." HCDA would like to continue to hear your comments on the Master Plan and addendum. Comments received during the community meeting and public consultation period will be addressed in a HCDA report that will be made available to the public prior to HCDA action on the Master Plan application.
